Animation Quality
Dreamworks has an interesting reputation with their animations as they are well known for movies such as Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon. So many people can expect the kind of animation they would do. However, they have been changing it up quite a bit ever since Puss in Boots The Last Wish where they made such amazing style decisions. Taking inspiration from animes and movies such as Into the Spiderverse, they did that with this movie giving the animation its own special look with it being so rich, detailed, and alive. Dreamworks does a great job i with beautiful animation that could have multiple frames in the movie as your wallpaper. If you wanna go watch it for the visuals alone then I will not argue.
Storyline
As great as the animation is the storyline is even better, based on a three-part book series the story combines both book one and part two due to the producer being unsure if the movie would get a sequel which is common in the industry(It's getting a sequel). Roz, a help robot, finds herself on a remote island after a shipping crate washes ashore. Struggling to achieve her programming, she learns from the animals around her and due to an accident, she has to take care of a duckling named Brightbill. Over time, Roz develops emotional connections and trust with the animals, discovering what it means to be alive, despite being a machine. Now this is a spoiler-free review so I don't want to get into the details but the story will pull your heartstrings and have your eyes watering. My girlfriend cried 3 times and I only once but close to 2 times.
Characters
Practically every single character in the movie is likable and the jokes hit so well, there were some that when at the beginning of the movie I thought would be annoying. But, I was proven wrong. And there was a pretty "large" amount of them and I still cared for each one due to how they are shown throughout the movie. The most impressive part of these characters has to be the voice acting. It was so good I didn't know how to voice them until the credits, especially Lupita Nyong'o, if there was an Oscar for voice acting she would've won this year. Roz and Brightbills relationship in the movie was portrayed so well it made me text my mother how much I loved her.
Critics
The movie somewhat has a villain, and I wish she had more time to explore her/give more screen time too. I know I said I loved the relationship between Roz and Brightbill but Birghtbills character could have been more interesting. That in no way means he's a bad character. There is genuinely very little to criticize about this movie.
Overall Rating
As you can tell by the review I absolutely adore this movie and is my favorite animinated movie of the year over Inside Out 2, Transformers One, and all the others.
